Evan Nessen, MS
I am an incoming first year PhD student in the Health and Human Physiology program at the University of Iowa where I will be mentored by Dr. Mandy Bunsawat. I am coming from Boston, MA where I completed my MS in Human Physiology. My master’s thesis investigated the influence of psychosocial factors on resting blood pressure in queer and heterosexual young adults. I have also worked at Boston Medical Center as a Research Coordinator where I had the opportunity to work on several heart failure clinical trials.
I am from Spokane, WA where I also completed my undergraduate studies in Human Physiology at Gonzaga University. Exercise is both a personal and professional passion of mine, and I hope to leverage exercise as a tool to discover mechanisms that inform lifestyle and pharmacologic therapies in patients who have, or are at risk of developing, cardiovascular disease. I have spent a lot of time in various fields such as fitness, physical therapy, and medicine. I ultimately fell in love with clinical research which led me to Dr. Bunsawat and the University of Iowa to pursue my PhD.
RESEARCH INTERESTS
I am particularly interested in exploring autonomic and vascular mechanisms mediating the therapeutic effects of exercise across the continuum of health and disease. I hope my research will better inform lifestyle and pharmacologic therapies for diverse clinical populations.
FUN FACTS
In 2025, I was in the top 0.007% of Charli XCX listeners on Spotify. I am very proud of this.
PERSONAL INTERESTS
I enjoy spending time with my partner, running (and occasionally training for half marathons), lifting weights, finding great coffee, letting my inner foodie run wild, spending time outdoors, and being around friends.
